Women know high heels aren't good for their feet, and they don't deny that they're uncomfortable. But the fact is, women would continue to wear high heels, even though they did not think them comfortable. Mark it up to the price of beauty.
Feet aren't made for heels
Despite what you're willing to tolerate as a lover of heels, you may be underestimating the damage that high heels can cause, beyond just having sore feet at the end of the day.
Not surprisingly, doctors of podiatric medicine (foot doctors) and orthopaedic surgeons see no value in high heels, which they generally define as pumps with heels of more than two inches.
You know those lovely curves you get with high heels? "It's not a normal anatomical position," says Teisha Chiarelli, a podiatrist in Glendale, Ariz.
Physicians say high heels are "biomechanically and orthopedically unsound," citing medical, postural and safety faults of such heels, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. Among the litany of problems to which stilettos and their sister heels contribute are knee and back problems, disabling injuries in falls and shortened calf muscles, not to mention an awkward, unnatural gait.
Uncovering women's footwear problems
While most high-heel fans aren't so willing to totally abandon their high pumps, studies indicates that many might be willing to make some adjustments - to a point.
A study by the American Podiatric Medical Association, 39 percent of women still wear high heels daily. This is down from the 60 percent who wore high heels back in 1986. This same study showed that 42 percent of women would wear uncomfortable shoes and that 73 percent had shoe-related foot problems.
Common ailments from wearing high heels are:
* Calluses and heel pain were the top shoe-related foot ailments.
* Women also complain about such conditions as bunions, swelling of the joint at the base of the big toe; hammertoes, a permanent bend in the middle joint of a toe; neuromas, nerve problems that cause shooting pain into the toes; ingrown toenails; and even stress fractures.
Chiarelli says high heels are a particular cause of concern.
"I've got elderly women come in who swear they've worn high heel shoes all their lives and say they can't wear a flat shoe. They get a physiologically shorter Achilles tendon. Over a period of time, we accommodate that position," she says.
Typically, Chiarelli says feet swell throughout the day and poorly fitting shoes won't accommodate that swelling. Sometimes the pain is achy, "almost a bone bruising," she says, or a sharp pain between the bones in the ball of the foot.
"We're looking at bony problems where the toes are starting to curl up from being in a narrow or pointed toe box," she says. "Probably the patient with the ugliest feet is a dancer because she's wearing toe shoes or high heels for dancing."
"Bony problems" are such a big part of foot problems that podiatrists even have a high-heel nickname for one condition - a pump bump. "It's a big old bump on the back of your heel," Chiarelli says. "It's like a callus of bone on the back of the heel from the shoe rubbing the bone."
Nail problems also are common from the constant pressure of toes being pressed against the end of the shoe. That can cause the nail to thicken and promote the growth of foul-smelling fungus. Plus, if a person has curved toenails, it can induce or exacerbate painful in-grown nails.
If you just can't imagine life without heels, Chiarelli suggests choosing styles with squared-off toes and shorter, chunkier heels instead of stilettos. Limit the time you wear heels
If a wide-heeled shoe isn't you anyway, then follow some of Chiarelli's other tips for female shoe shoppers:
* Look for thicker soles for absorbing shock better and putting less pressure on the foot as well as an upper material, such as leather or microfiber, that will give a little to allow the foot to swell without pinching. "Those will still look nice and not hurt so badly," she says.
* If you simply must wear high heels, then limit the time you wear them. Alternate between high heel and low heel shoes to prevent the Achilles tendon from tightening. Wearing flatter shoes or tennis shoes for walking long distances, such as to and from the office and then changing into your heels once you get to work.
* Shop for shoes at the end of the day to accommodate the foot's normal swelling.
* Give your feet a nice massage or soak them in lukewarm water at the end of the day. "If your foot has been put in that funny position all day, it feels like it's stuck that way," Chiarelli says. "Treat yourself."
If you want to want to be good to your feet, then consider following the American Podiatric Medical Association's recommendation on "perhaps the best shoe you can buy from an orthopedic point of view" - a walking shoe with ties (not a slip-on), a Vibram-type composition sole and a relatively wider heel, no more than a half or three-quarters of an inch in height.

Trisha Krishnan was born on the 4th of May 1983 in Pallakad, Kerala, India. She speaks English, Hindi, Tamil and French. She studied at Church Park, India and Ethiraj College, India. She is an only child and she lives with her parents and her grandmother. She was introduced into the film industry through director Ameer Sultan’s film, Mounam Pesiyadhey where she acted in opposite Surya. After that, she acted in Priyadarshan’s Tamil project entitled Laysa Laysa. She was crowned Miss Chennai in the year 2000 and won Miss Salem in the year 1999 and won Miss India Beautiful Smile in 2001. Among her hobbies are listening to music, reading and swimming.

Trisha Krishnan first made her debut in films when she was offered a small cameo in the film Jodi. However, the first movie in which she signed up to enact the role of the leading lady was Priyadarshan’s Leysa Leysa. A string of flops marked the beginning of her career, such as Manasellam, and Alai. However she was well suited for her role opposite Surya in Mounam Pesiyadhe and won critical acclaim. She then played Vikram’s lady love in the mega blockbuster Saamy. The next huge film she took part in followed immediately afterwards, was Ghilli with Vijay, which was a remake of Telugu blockbuster Okkadu.
In 2004, she starred in Varsham in Telugu which went on to become the biggest hit of the year and turned her into an overnight sensation. In 2005, she starred alongside Siddharth Narayan in the Telugu flick Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana as the village girl Siri. The movie is about a rich boy, who tries to marry a girl – however her brother opposes. It is directed by Prabhu Deva, was successful at the box office,and Krishnan won two awards for the film which include the Filmfare Award and Nandi Award.
She appeared in Mani Ratnam’s Aayutha Ezhuthu which was remade into a hit Hindi movie Yuva. The Tamil version included Siddharth Narayan, Madhavan and Surya. Her later movies, Ji, Aathi and Aaru did not do well – though Aaru was received well by critics and both dubbed in Tamil and Telugu and produced by Saran, who had previously directed several successful movies.Her 2006 Telugu movie, Pournami, directed by Prabhu Deva, was a flop. However, another 2006 film, Something Something … Unnakum Ennakum, where Krishnan acted opposite Jayam Ravi, did well at the box office. Her next release after Sainikudu was Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule where she was cast opposite Venkatesh. This film was Selvaraghavan’s first film in Telugu. The film released on 27 April 2007. The film is a family entertainer and received good response especially from the family audience. The box office returns exceeded the collections of later releases like Aata and Munna. Krishnan’s performance is one of the highlights of the movie.

India's Top Business Women
Entrepreneur Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairman & Managing Director of Bioon Ltd., who became India's richest woman in 2004 (an estimated Rs.2,100 crore )~US$480 million), was educated at the Bishop Cotton Girls School and Mount Carmel College in Bangalore. She founded Biocon India with a capital of Rs.10,000 in her garage in 1978 - the initial operation was to extract an enzyme from papaya. Her application for loans were turned down by banks then - on three counts - biotechnology was then a new word, thecompany lacked assets, and (most importantly) women entrepreneurs were still a rarity. Today, her company is the bigget biopharmaceutical firm in the country. In 2006, Shaw caused a few Page 3 ruffles after a much hyped photograph showed her in an embraceand lip-lock with senior BJP leader Vasundhara Raje Scinidia.
Ekta Kapoor, creative head of Balajji Telefilms, is the daughter of actor Jeetendra, and sister of actor Tushar Kapoor. She has been synonymous with the rage of soap operas on Indian TV, after her most famous venture 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', which started airing on STAR Plus in 2000. Ekta dominates Indian television, producing more than eight television soaps. At the 6th Indian Telly Awards 2006, she bagged the Hall of Fame award for her contributions. Most of her creations begin with the letter'K' due to her superstition that it brings her good luck.
Sunita Narain, an environmentalist and political activist as well as a major proponent of the Green concept of sustainable development, was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2005. Narain, who has been with the India-based Centre for Science and Environment since 1982, is currently the director of the Centre, and the director of the Society for Environmental Communications, and publisher of the fortnightly magazine, 'Down to Earth'.
Neelam Dhawan, Microsoft India managing director, leads Microsoft's sales and marketing operations in the country. A Stephenian (graduated in 1980), she passed out of Delhi's Faculty of Management Studies in 1982. Back then, while she was keen to join FMCG majors like Hindustan Lever and Asian Paints, both companies rejected Dhawan as they did not want to appoint women for marketing.
Naina Lal Kidwai was the first Indian woman to graduate from the Harvard Business School. Fortune magazine listed Kidwai among the World's Top 50 Corporate Women from 2000 to 2003. According to the Economic Times, she is the first woman to head the operations of a foreign bank in India (HSBC). Kidwai was awarded the Padma Shri this year.
Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Joint Managing Director of Kinetic Engineering Ltd., is in-charge of the company's overall business developmental activities. She is also the Director of Kinetic Motor Company Limited and Kinetic Marketing Services Limited. A fitness freak and avid sports enthusiast, she even played badminton at the national level. The magazine 'India Today' has honoured her with the title of business 'Face of the Millennium'. She was ranked among the top 25 business entrepreneurs of the country,and was also presented with the Society Young Achiever's Award for Business in 2002. The same year, she was chosen as the 'Global Leader of Tomorrow' by the World Economic Forum.
Mallika Srinivasan, Director of TAFE India (her husband is automobile tycoon Venu Srinivasan, CMD of TVS Motors) was named Businesswoman of the year in 2006. When she joined the company in 1986, its turnover was Rs.85 crore, and at the time of her award,TAFE and its allied companies were earning revenues of Rs.2,900 crore. A couple of years after her marriage in 1982, and less than a year after her daughter was born, Srinivasan went to Wharton to pursue her MBA. It's no surprise that TAFE also runs hospitals and schools. A serious votary of woman power, Srinivasan says women's contribution to society has often been underestimated.
Dr. Jatinder Kaur Arora, an outstanding scientist from Punjab, was conferred a national award for her work on women's development through science and technology. Dr. Arora, perhaps the first scientist to get such an award, is a doctorate in microbiology and has a brilliant academic record. An unlikely and fairly new contender on this list, she is serving as a joint director in the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology at present.
Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi, chairman and executive officer of PepsiCo, was according to Forbes magazine's 2006 poll, the fourth most powerful woman in the world. She was also named the #1 Most Powerful Woman in Business in 2006 by Fortune magazine. She got her bachelor's degree from Madras Christian College in 1974, entered the Business Diploma programme at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, and later moved to the US to attend the Yale School of Management. Nooyi serves on the board of directors of several organizations, including Motorola, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the International Rescue Committee, and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Among her friends are former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who describes her asa 'wild New York Yankees fan'.
